Comme Des Garcons

The White T-Shirt, Reviewed

I’m the kind of gal who is more at ease in understated clothing, especially a crisp white tee. The humble white t-shirt started life as a comfortable undergarment for sailors and marines. Fast-forward a century, however, and the white t-shirt is now a cult item.  It’s a staple that’s simple and fresh, and with its power to be adapted to any outfit, styling options seem almost endless.

I like to team my white tees with a well-fitted cigarette pant and a pair of Stan Smiths.

Below are quick rundowns of 5 styles, which I have tried and tested and all favor for individual reasons.

LOOSE FIT COTTON T-SHIRT / COS

This simple and relaxed t-shirt is perfect for everyday wear. It's extremely soft and comfortable and my preferred tee for those lazy days; the graduated hem and subtle side slits add interest to some of my more 'basic' outfits. My only caution with this t-shirt is, it is relatively oversized so you might be inclined to size down. [worn here]

ORGANIC FINE JERSEY T / AMERICAN APPAREL

The rise and fall of American Apparel truly saddens me, because, despite any leaked, behind the scenes scandals, I still stand by the brands t-shirt quality. I have AA tees in my wardrobe that are 5 years old, have survived a year backpacking in Australia and are STILL going strong.  They wash significantly better than any other t-shirt I’ve owned, and in fact I’m more impressed by how well they wash in comparison to more costly items in my wardrobe.  All American Apparel tees I’ve tried have been exceptionally soft and flattering, you can’t go wrong with them.

MADDISON T-SHIRT / WOODWOOD

This interpretation of a classic from Wood Wood is lightly off white, in colour and extremely lightweight (marginally sheer) making it a great tee for the warmer months. A perfectly subtle ‘w.w’ logo is featured on the bottom left hand side of the tee. The cut is slim-straight (if that exists in the t-shirt world), giving it a relaxed fit without looking oversized or ill fitting.  The quality and durability is impressive, to date, I haven’t experienced any issues with the stitching on the tee or any piling, bobbling etc. [worn here]

COTTON T-SHIRT / COS

Surprise surprise, another COS number. At £12 a tee though, you can’t blame me. This icy white, everyday essential, is my go to work tshirt, thanks to the simple and sophisticated design, you can pass this off as being smart.  They are super soft, flattering and a winner all round.

RED HEART PLAY TSHIRT / COMME DES GARCONS PLAY

You’re probably thinking, what makes a t-shirt worth £64? And no it’s not just that charming little red heart. For me, it’s the fit and weight of the tee. I endeavor to find any other T-shirt that fits my petite frame as satisfyingly as the CDG PLAY range. The silhouette is boxy, not relaxed or oversized; it’s just straight up and down. Made from 100% cotton, it’s thick and completely opaque with a chunky, high neckline band, probably not too dissimilar to those starchy fruit of the loom T’s you wore as a kid (which I love).  Comme Des Garcons tick all my ‘perfect T’ boxes.  Follow the washing instructions and keep clear of any tumble dryer and it will become a faithful companion.
